![]() They get lost if you ever use the file on mobile - neither Android or iPhone can represent them. They are lost if the file is ever served on any web page - that makes them seriously flawed as a way to retain data. Most Mac users might eventually have a friend or family member with a Windows PC - these metadata flags can’t be represented there and will be lost. They cannot possibly survive the test of time. People should really stop using MacOS tags for anything they want to preserve in the long term (like 20 years). A transcript will be emailed to the email address used to initiate the chat. " To end the chat, simply close the tab, or it will close after a few minutes of inactivity. (08:49:57 PM) Tony: Please do, good luck, and thanks! (08:49:26 PM) thevoidinclusive: I will try these options. (08:48:14 PM) Tony: Questions on any of that, or others? (08:45:28 PM) Tony: (once when backed up, and again when requested in the Restore) (08:45:15 PM) Tony: Of course, due to the natrure of the Backup, some of the dates will be modified, as they are copies of copies being recovered, Better Zip 2 is a robust archive application, which you can download directly from their website here: " " - Unarchiver is a free utility that can be downloaded either from the Mac App store or directly from their website here: ![]() To unzip & retain those dates we would recommend using Win-zip to unpack them as well. (08:44:46 PM) Tony: If I recall correctly, we use Win-zip to pack the data. Those fields on files seem fine - just the folders' dates are changed. I'm putting all my dead laptop's restored files on my new laptop, but all folders' Created/Modified dates have been reset to the time of unzipping. (08:43:18 PM) thevoidinclusive: How does Backblaze zip the restore files, and how can I unzip them without all Date Created/Modified fields on Folders being overwritten? So if they don't know folders aren't backed up or restored, how do you expect anyone else to? They sent me down a wormhole of needlessly testing several different pieces of software to see if any of them will yield date information upon unzipping. I don't know what excluding folders is saving you, but I don't think it's worth it.ītw, you might want to inform your support staff of this technical policy, because they work there and they don't even know you fake the folders. This problem has been compounded by the fact that I'm now in a "Safety Freeze," and I have to figure that shit out, too.Īfter I get these debacles sorted out, I'll be looking at other backup services that offer a standard filesystem backup, and not some "sorry, 'files' only" approach. What was initially peace of mind from having active and up-to-date Backblaze backups when my previous laptop died has now turned into a massive pain in the ass and issue of unexpected data loss. I feel like the fact that folders and their metadata are not preserved by Backblaze should be written in GIANT LETTERS somewhere for those that rely on folder metadata for sorting and archiving.
